Annealing and welding heat inputs made during stainless steel fabrication create welding burns on the surface of stainless steel, causing distortions. Stainless steel produced under these conditions loses its protective passive layer and becomes susceptible to corrosion. It is necessary to re-install the passive layer by removing impurities and heat stains after production. (See What is Passivation?)
